Levon Khachigian is Professor in Medicine at UNSW where he heads the Vascular Biology and Translational Research Laboratory in the Faculty of Medicine and Health. After obtaining his PhD, Levon trained in vascular pathobiology as NHMRC CJ Martin Fellow and Fulbright Fellow at Harvard Medical School where he was appointed Instructor, then held appointments at UNSW as NHMRC RD Wright Fellow, Principal Research Fellow, Senior Principal Research Fellow and Australia Fellow.
As a molecular biologist driven by discovery and translational research, Levon pioneered novel strategies targeting immediate-early genes in multiple proliferative and inflammatory disorders and directed the bench-to-bedside transition of novel drugs he developed through to first-in-human/class clinical trials. His team’s innovative research has been recognised by the Commonwealth Health Minister’s Award for Excellence in Health and Medical Research, GSK Award for Research Excellence, Australasian Science Prize, Gottschalk Medal and 3 Eureka Prizes.
